Although many drugs contain sulfa -- the sulfa-containing compound that commonly causes allergic reactions in people is found in drugs such as Bactrim (a common antibiotic), in thiazides (a common class of diuretics often used for high blood pressure), and in sulfonylureas (a medication used for diabetes).

In most cases, there are alternatives to these medications and other sulfa containing medications -- always inform your health care providers (doctor, nurse, pharmacist, etc.) about your allergies to medications so they can take this into consideration when providing care.
