What should I know about Tekturna before taking it?

Before taking Tekturna (aliskiren) you should be aware of some of the risks associated with this medication. It's important to know that Tekturna is not safe for women who are pregnant; it may cause harm or even death to a developing fetus. If you become pregnant while using Tekturna, stop taking it right away and call your doctor immediately. If you plan on becoming pregnant while using Tekturna, talk to your doctor about other treatment options. It's unknown whether Tekturna passes into breast milk, so women should talk to their doctors before breastfeeding if they're taking Tekturna. You should also not take Tekturna if you have kidney problems or if you're allergic to it or any of its ingredients. Tell your doctor about any medications and supplements you're taking before starting Tekturna, because they may interact with the medication. This is especially important if you're taking antifungal medications, diuretics ("water pills"), other medications for high blood pressure or heart problems, medications that contain potassium or cyclosporine. Remember that Tekturna is not a cure for high blood pressure. It only works to control its symptoms. You must take Tekturna regularly for it to be effective, so continue to take the medication exactly as prescribed, even if you're feeling better. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about any of the risks associated with Tekturna.
