What should I know about timolol maleate ophthalmic GFS before using it?

Unlike many topical drugs, the timolol in timolol maleate ophthalmic gel forming solution (timolol GFS or Timoptic-XE) can be absorbed systemically. If you have diabetes, a heart condition or lung disease such as asthma or emphysema, be sure that the doctor prescribing timolol GFS is aware. People who use an Epi-Pen self-injection device for severe allergic reactions should know that beta-blocker medicines such as timolol can decrease the effectiveness of epinephrine. You should also know that timolol GFS becomes a gel only after instillation into the eye and it may cause blurred vision for 30 seconds to five minutes. If you are also using other topical eye medicines, apply them at least 10 minutes before administering timolol GFS. You also should shake the timolol GFS bottle once before each use.

Avoid touching the eye or surrounding areas with the tip of the bottle, as this could cause bacterial contamination of the solution resulting in eye infection. Some people have developed severe eye damage and loss of vision after using contaminated solution. No adequate studies have been done on pregnant women but timolol GFS has been detected in breast milk which could cause adverse effects on infants. Your doctor will weigh the risks and benefits of using timolol GFS while nursing. In addition, safety and efficacy in children is unknown.
