What is timolol maleate ophthalmic gel forming solution?

Timolol maleate ophthalmic gel forming solution (GFS) is a prescription topical eye medication used to reduce eye pressure in people with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. The brand name of this medication is Timoptic-XE. Timolol GFS is a liquid at room temperature, but becomes a gel after administration into the eye. Some studies have shown better penetration through the cornea with the gel forming solution, as opposed to the regular solution which is rapidly diluted by tears. Timolol GFS works to decrease eye pressure by decreasing the amount of fluid produced.
