What are the side effects of timolol maleate ophthalmic solution?

Some people have temporary burning upon administering the solution. Other side effects include:

  • pain
  • discharge
  • crusting
  • conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • tearing
  • itching
  • the sensation of a foreign body in the eye

Systemic side effects occur because the eye drops are absorbed into the bloodstream. The cardiovascular side effects are:

  • slow heart rate
  • low blood pressure
  • high blood pressure
  • arrhythmia
  • fainting
  • stroke
  • heart block
  • cardiac arrest
  • decreased blood flow to the brain
  • heart failure

In addition, people have reported:

  • worsening of angina
  • pulmonary edema
  • claudication (pain in the calves due to poor circulation)
  • cold hands and feet
  • Raynaud's phenomenon (attacks of decreased circulation to the extremities)

In addition, respiratory side effects also occur and these are:

  • difficulty breathing
  • respiratory failure
  • nasal congestion
  • cough
  • bronchospasm

Side effects in the digestive system include:

  • nausea
  • loss of appetite
  • diarrhea
  • dry mouth
  • indigestion

Hypersensitivity (allergic system) reactions are rash, hives, anaphylaxis, and deep tissue edema. In addition, ocular side effects include:

  • visual disturbances
  • inflammation of the cornea or eyelids
  • decreased sensitivity of the cornea
  • droopy eyelid

There are also neuropsychiatric side effects and these are:

  • worsening symptoms of myasthenia gravis
  • insomnia
  • drowsiness
  • nightmares
  • memory loss
  • hallucinations
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • nervousness
  • disorientation

Miscellaneous side effects include:

  • impotence
  • difficulty urinating
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • upper respiratory infections
  • weakness
  • fatigue
  • chest pain
  • lupus
  • hair loss
  • worsening of psoriasis
  • psoriasis-like rash
