Why would a doctor prescribe hydroxyzine?

A doctor might prescribe hydroxyzine (Atarax, Vistaril and others) to treat allergic reactions such as itching and hives. He or she might also prescribe it for anxiety, nausea, vomiting, motion sickness and alcohol withdrawal symptoms, such as tremors. It’s thought that hydroxyzine works by reducing activity in certain areas of the central nervous system.
