What should I know about hydroxyzine before taking it?

Hydroxyzine is a type of antihistamine that can cause drowsiness. Before using hydroxyzine, discuss with your doctor possible side effects and how they can affect your daily activities. You'll also want to discuss any current medications you're taking to treat pain, allergy or cold, depression, anxiety or sleeplessness. Tell your doctor if you have a medical condition that affects your breathing, ability to urinate, liver, kidney, blood pressure, thyroid, eyes or stomach. Talk about your medical history and whether you've had seizures or have a seizure disorder; there's a risk for seizures when taking hydroxyzine. There's also a risk of harm to a fetus, so it's important to tell your doctor if you become pregnant while using hydroxyzine. It's also important to note that older adults are more prone to severe side effects associated with hydroxyzine, such as dizziness, chest congestion, upset stomach, (dry mouth?) and reddening of the skin.
