What is metoclopramide injection?

Metoclopramide injection treats gastroparesis (slow emptying of the stomach) in people who have diabetes. This drug also treats people who have persistent heartburn from gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). It is used for the short-term treatment of GERD in those who do not find relief from other medications. It also may be used to prevent nausea and vomiting that can occur after chemotherapy treatment or surgery. Metoclopramide injection is occasionally used to empty the intestines during some medical procedures. Another possible use is the treatment of nausea and pain caused by migraines. This drug belongs to a class of drugs known as prokinetic agents. It works by blocking a chemical in the brain and by increasing the muscle contractions of the upper digestive tract. This helps speed up the time it takes the stomach to empty into the intestines.

Typically these injections will only be used when you are unable to take pills that perform the same function. Metoclopramide injection is the generic name for this drug. This drug is available under the brand name Reglan.
