What is hydroxyzine?

Hydroxyzine is a generic prescription medication that provides relief from the symptoms of tension and anxiety. It also is used to relieve the itching caused by allergic reactions. In addition, hydroxyzine may be used before and after general anesthesia as a sedative. Classified as an antihistamine, hydroxyzine works by reducing the effects of a chemical in the body called histamine. The brand name for hydroxyzine hydrochloride is Atarax. Hydroxyzine is also available as hydroxyzine pamoate; the brand name is Vistaril. Generic versions are available for both forms of hydroxyzine.
