What is dronabinol?

Dronabinol is the name of the active ingredient in a brand-name drug called Marinol. It is a synthesized form of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC), one of many active compounds found in the Cannabis sativa L (marijuana) plant. It is used for treatment of nausea and vomiting that is caused by chemotherapy. It is used only when other medications have shown to be unsuccessful. It can help reverse weight loss in cancer and AIDS patients by stimulating appetite. This medication is a cannabinoid and is thought to work by affecting the portion in the brain responsible for nausea and eating behavior. It is available as a capsule that is taken orally.
