Is Vistaril safe during breastfeeding?

There is very little research on whether the active ingredient, hydroxyzine pamoate, is passed into breast milk and what effect it may have on your baby. The safest approach is not to use Vistaril until more is known. In one telephone survey, about 1 in 10 women who were taking Vistaril and breastfeeding reported irritability in their babies. High doses, such as those given by injection for certain medical conditions, may have a stronger effect on your baby. On the other hand, if you are taking a pill once a day, you may be able to take it at night after the last scheduled feeding, to reduce any possible effects on your baby. Talk to your doctor to determine if this is the best approach for you.
