How should I take Zofran?

Zofran (ondansetron), an anti-nausea medicine, comes in different forms. You can take it with, or without, food.
  • If you are prescribed a regular tablet, take it with a full glass of water.
  • If you are prescribed a liquid, measure the dose with a special dose-measuring spoon, not a kitchen spoon.
  • If you are prescribed an “orally disintegrating tablet,” take special precautions. These dissolve on your tongue and act very quickly but you want to make sure the medicine dissolves where it is supposed to. Keep the tablet in the blister pack until you need it, and then open the package by peeling back the foil; do not try to push the tablet through, as that may damage it. Make sure your hands are dry, so it does not dissolve on your hands. Place it in your mouth; it will begin to dissolve immediately. Let it start to dissolve before swallowing, but feel free to swallow several times, and wash it down with water or a beverage. Zofran can also be given intravenously and is administered by a healthcare professional.
Store Zofran in a cool, dry place. Room temperature is fine.
