Could I be allergic to Vistaril?

Stacy Wiegman, PharmD
Pharmacy Specialist

Allergy symptoms are triggered by the release of a natural compound called histamine. Histamine starts a cascade of changes in your body that result in allergy symptoms, whether sneezes and a runny nose or hives on your skin. Vistaril (hydroxyzine pamoate) blocks the action of histamine, preventing those allergic symptoms.

Though Vistaril is used to treat allergy symptoms, you can be allergic to hydroxyzine pamoate, the active ingredient in Vistaril. Call 911 immediately if you develop symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, hives on your skin or swelling of your face, tongue, lips or throat. If you have allergies to medicines or foods, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Vistaril.
