Why did my doctor tell me to take pramlintide?

Pramlintide (brand name Symlin) is intended for people with type-1 diabetes mellitus who use mealtime insulin and have failed to achieve desired glucose control with optimal insulin dosing, and for people with type-2 diabetes mellitus who use mealtime insulin and who have failed to achieve desired glucose control with optimal insulin dosing with or without oral sulfonylurea agent and/or metformin.

So you must have a diagnosis of either type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes. and your current insulin therapy is not working well enough to keep your blood sugar level within your goal range.
