What should I avoid while taking glipizide and metformin?

Until you know how you will react to glipizide and metformin, you should not drive or operate any heavy machinery. Alcohol and tobacco should also be avoided. Certain medications should never be used while taking glipizide and metformin, such as ioglycamic acid, ioglicic acid, iohexol, iopamidol, iomeprol, iopanoic acid, iophendylate, iopentol, iopromide, ioseric acid, iopronic acid, iosimide, iothalamate, iotasul, iotrolan, ioversol, iotroxic acid, ioxalgate, ipodate, ioxitalamic acid, metrizamide, diatrizoate, acetrizoic acid, ethiodized oil, iobitridol, iobenzamic acid, iocarmic acid, dofetilide, iocetamic acid, gatifloxacin, iodipamide, iodamide, iodixanol, metrizoic acid, iodopyracet acid, iodohippuric acid, idoxamic acid, and tyropanoate sodium. Other medications that may also react badly with glipizide and metformin include aspirin, chloramphenicol, clarithromycin, digoxin, diuretics, female hormones and birth control pills, isoniazid, blood pressure, heart disease, and irregular heart beat medications, fungal infection medications, MAO inhibitors, morphine, niacin, NSAIDs, phenothiazines, phenytoin, probenecid, procainamide, quinidine, ranitidine, steroid medicines, stimulant medicines, thyroid medicines, trimethoprim, vancomycin, and warfarin.

Because glipizide and metformin lowers your blood sugar levels, it can sometimes result in blood sugar levels that are too low, or hypoglycemia. In order to avoid a hypoglycemic episode, you should try to avoid stress and alcohol, and make sure to eat regular meals. If your glucose levels drop too low and you suffer from a hypoglycemic episode there are several things you can do to bring it back up, such as consuming a sugar source like orange juice, milk, candy, or glucose gel, or using an injection of glucagon.
