What is saxagliptin?

Saxagliptin is the generic name for Onglyza, a prescription drug used to treat type 2 diabetes. It increases the amount of insulin a person's body produces after meals.

Saxagliptin is not effective for treating type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, a side effect of very high blood sugar.
