What is pramlintide?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Practitioner

Pramlintide (Symlin) is a synthetic form of the hormone amylin. Pramlintide lowers blood sugar by slowing digestion and limiting glucose production by the liver. Pramlintide is taken by injection before meals. It is usually prescribed for people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes as an addition to mealtime insulin. It is often recommended for those whose blood glucose remains above goal despite insulin therapy.
