What are the side effects of Avandia?

The possible side effects of Avandia range from mild to serious. Some side effects can be reduced or prevented. Talk with your doctor if you develop any symptoms that are ongoing or troublesome, including any of the following:

cold symptoms such as sore throat, runny or congested nose, stuffy ears, sneezing, coughing
chills, fever
voice changes, hoarseness
general discomfort or feeling ill
trouble sleeping
joint or muscle pain
back pain
pain around the cheekbones or eyes

More serious possible side effects which can require medical attention include the following:

bone fractures in women
heart failure, heart attack or other serious heart problems
macular edema (an eye disease associated with diabetes)
liver problems
hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can lead to coma if left untreated
unexpected ovulation
weight gain

Contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following symptoms, which may indicate a serious problem:

chest pain
irregular or rapid heartbeat
difficulty catching your breath
noisy or difficult breathing
coughing, possibly with frothy pink sputum
stomach or abdominal pain
nausea or vomiting
decreased appetite
increased hunger or thirst
lighter-colored stools
increased or decreased urination
dark urine
yellowing of the eyes or skin
dry, flushed skin
pale skin
hives or similar swelling or skin rash
reddened skin
blue fingernails or lips
dry mouth
unusual weakness
pain in the shoulders, arms, jaw, or neck
swelling of hands, fingers, lower legs, or feet
sudden weight gain
sudden or unexpected weight loss
bleeding or bruising
blurred vision or other vision changes
fruity-smelling breath
slurred speech
