Is Lantus real Insulin, and is it carcinogenic?

William Lee Dubois
Endocrinology Diabetes & Metabolism
Lantus is real insulin, but it has been "bubble-wrapped" to make to dissolve slowly into your body, turning it into an elegant time release medication. This allows many patients to take a single shot a day instead of 2-4 shots.

The cancer scare is the result of a study that suggested a link between Lantus and cancer. The link was discovered not in a clinical trial, but rather at a study that compared various data from an insurance database in Germany, so it is difficult to be sure of cause-and-effect. A quick look at other data bases gave mixed results.

More studies will need to be done, and are underway, but it's still pretty early in the game to be able to say if or if not Lantus is connected to cancer risk, and in what kind of people. Additionally, no one has looked at other insluins in the same category to see if a similar association is found, so it is unknown if switching to another brand will have an impact on risk. What we do know is that letting your diabetes get out of control will kill you before cancer has a chance.

Lantus has been in use worldwide for about ten years.

Lantus is insulin that has been chemically-modified in a couple positions to make it longer-acting and without peaks. A report from the FDA suggested that there is a possible link between Lantus and cancer. However, the risk of cancer associated with Lantus is not well defined and more studies are being conducted to determine if there is truly a link between Lantus and cancer. The FDA is recommending that you continue with your current insulin therapy, especially if you have found it helpful in the management of your diabetes. For more information on risk associated please consult your doctor.
