Who should not take desipramine?

Desipramine should not be used by certain people. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits before taking this drug. It may not be right for you if you have heart or thyroid disease, glaucoma, liver disease or a seizure disorder. If you have recently suffered a heart attack, desipramine may not be right for you. Also, if you have current or past problems with urinating you should not take desipramine.

Most important, if you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) or have stopped taking it within the last two weeks, you should not take desipramine. Serious side effects and even death could result. If you have bipolar disease, schizophrenia or other mental illness, desipramine may not be right for you.
