What is Nardil?

Nardil (phenelzine) is an antidepressant medication available as an oral tablet. Nardil belongs to a category of drugs called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). It can treat depression and other mental health problems by changing the levels of certain chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

Nardil is generally prescribed to people experiencing depression and/or anxiety who have not been helped by other medications. Although MAOIs are the oldest class of antidepressants available, they no longer tend to be a doctor's first choice for treating mental health problems, because they can interact with foods and other medications. Those interactions can cause potentially dangerous side effects.
