What is milnacipran?

Milnacipran is prescribed to relieve symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. Milnacipran belongs to the class of medications called serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, or SNRIs. The medication works by blocking the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, however, the exact mechanism of the benefit of milnacipran in fibromyalgia is not known.

Although milnacipran is not indicated to treat depression, the drug is part of the same drug classification as several antidepressants. Milnacipran, therefore, may carry some of the same risks as SNRI antidepressants, including an increase in suicidal thoughts, and so should be monitored accordingly.

Milnacipran is manufactured under the brand name Savella. The medication comes as a tablet that is taken orally, and is available only through a prescription.
