The prescription drug fluoxetine hydrochloride treats depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic attacks, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and some eating disorders. It is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. It works by increasing levels of serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of well-being, in the brain.
