How does Pristiq interact with other medications or foods?

Dr. Jeanne Morrison, PhD
Family Practitioner

Pristiq interacts negatively with a number of medications. These include any medicines containing venlafaxine or desvenlafaxine, any monoamine oxidase inhibitor drugs (MAOIs), a fenfluramine derivitative or the drugs methylene blue, nefazodone or tryptophan. Pristiq also should not be taken with the herbal supplement St. John's wort. Certain diet medicines, linezolid, lithium, methylene blue, metoclopramide, nefazodone, rasagiline, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), selegiline, serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonists, SNRIs, St. John's wort, tramadol, trazodone, tricyclic antidepressants, or tryptophan interact poorly with Pristiq. Tell your doctor if you're taking anticoagulants, aspirin, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as these may increase the risk of bleeding internally, especially in the stomach. Do not combine Pristiq with diuretics, azole antifungals, cyproheptadine, desipramine, or midazolam because these drugs might increase the risk of side effects or decrease the drug's effectiveness. Don't take Pristiq and venlafaxine at the same time, as they are similar enough to cause an overdose. Tell your doctor if you are taking medications for anxiety, mental illness, or seizures; certain medications for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); medications for migraine; nefazodone; sedatives; sleeping pills; or tranquilizers - your doctor may need to adjust the dosage of these medications to accommodate Pristiq. Do not drink alcohol while taking Pristiq, as it may cause stomach bleeding.
