What should I know about citalopram before taking it?

If you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), taking citalopram simultaneously is dangerous to your health. Wait at least 14 days after stopping usage of your MAOI before starting your new regimen. Some people experience side effects of moodiness, irritability, restlessness, or hostility, and some have thoughts of suicide while taking citalopram. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk with your doctor before you begin taking citalopram. Citalopram can be hazardous to fetal health.

Some allergies and medications may react negatively to citalopram. Citalopram may also cause complications with some medical conditions, particularly liver or kidney disease, or seizure disorders like epilepsy. As with any prescription medication, be sure to first discuss your health condition and any possible complications with your physician.
