Is Remeron a good drug to try first for depression?

Remeron (mirtazapine) is one of a number of antidepressants generally recommended as a starting point for people with depression. Other good first-line drugs include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) and bupropion. Whichever of these drugs you try, your doctor may have to adjust the dose several times before determining whether it is working properly. If you are improving even slightly, your doctor may decide to keep you on the medicine for at least a month or so before you both decide if you should try adding another drug to your treatment or switching to a different antidepressant.
