How does Nardil work to treat anxiety?

The antidepressant Nardil (phenelzine) can treat anxiety in some people by raising the level of certain chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

Anxiety disorders affect about 40 million American adults, causing symptoms that may include feelings of panic, obsessive thoughts, excessive self-consciousness, or other problems. Nardil isn't generally the first medication people try for anxiety disorders, but if other antidepressants fail, Nardil can sometimes be helpful.
