How does Effexor XR interact with other medications and foods?

Effexor XR should be taken with food and swallowed with a liquid. A potentially life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome can result when this medication is taken in addition to certain migraine drugs, St. John's Wort, MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors), SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), lithium, tryptophan, some pain relievers, the antibiotic linezolid and illegal drugs.

Alcohol and other central nervous system depressants that may make you drowsy should not be used with Effexor XR, including antihistamines, cold medications, allergy medications, sedatives, muscle relaxants and anesthetics.

A higher risk of gastrointestinal bleeding has been found when NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), such as aspirin or anticoagulant drugs, are used while an individual is taking Effexor XR.
