How effective is nortriptyline for quitting smoking?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Practitioner

Studies show nortriptyline is about as effective as bupropion or nicotine replacement therapy, but not as effective as varenicline. Nortriptyline and clonidine are sometimes used to help people quit smoking when nicotine replacement, bupropion, and varenicline cannot be taken or do not work. For people who have had depression, nortriptyline is especially useful for quitting smoking.
