How effective is doxepin at treating insomnia?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Practitioner

Sleep studies have shown that people taking doxepin wake up fewer times at night and spend less time awake when they do wake up. It maintains this effect through most or all of the night, longer than many other sleep drugs. It is less effective than other prescription sleep drugs for helping a person get to sleep, and is not meant to be used for that purpose.
