Does desipramine hydrochloride interact with other medications?

Desipramine hydrochloride does interact with other medications. In particular, desipramine hydrochloride interacts with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). These medications should not be taken together. In addition, you should not take desipramine within two weeks of ceasing an MAOI, as there are serious and sometimes fatal results.

Desipramine also interacts with medications that improve your breathing (like albuterol) or that relax certain muscles (like dicyclomine). Cimetidine (Tagamet), fluoxetine, guanethidine (Ismelin), paroxetine and sertraline also interact with desipramine hydrochloride. Sedatives/hypnotics and thyroid medications also interact with desipramine.

In addition, alcohol and other depressant medications such as narcotics, painkillers, sleeping medications and tranquilizers can cause extreme fatigue and serious side effects if taken with desipramine.
