What is Dilantin Kapseal?

Dilantin Kapseal is the brand name of the active ingredient phenytoin, in the extended-release capsule formulation. It is an anticonvulsant used to prevent or control certain types of seizures. It may be used for people with grand mal seizures (in which a person loses consciousness and experiences convulsions) or with temporal lobe seizures (in which a person loses awareness but not consciousness and may have unusual movements, preceded by odd sensations or emotions). Dilantin also may help treat patients during and after brain surgery. This medication works by reducing abnormal electrical activity in the brain. The capsule is intended to be swallowed whole, not chewed or opened.
