What is Depacon?

Depacon is a brand-name version of the active ingredient valproate sodium solution for injection. Depacon is used to treat various seizures in people who cannot tolerate oral medication, including absence, complex partial, myoclonic and tonic-clonic seizures. It is administered intravenously (IV) over the course of one hour. Exactly how Depacon works is not clear, but it is believed that its anticonvulsant effects have something to do with its ability to elevate brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter.
