Can valproic acid be used to treat migraine headaches?

Valproic acid has been found to help prevent migraine headaches.  It is not useful in treating a migraine headache once it has started. Talk with your doctor to see if this medicine may be right for you. Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, because valproic acid might not be safe for your unborn baby.
