What are the side effects of Carbamazepine XR?

Carbamazepine XR can cause serious side effects. This drug can cause suicidal thoughts. People of Asian descent may be at a higher risk of a serious, rare skin reaction; you may need a blood test to determine whether you are at risk. Carbamazepine XR can cause drowsiness, so care should be taken when driving or operating machinery. Other serious side effects that require medical intervention are:

  • sore throat
  • fever
  • headache with a severe peeling, blistering, or red skin rash
  • easy bleeding or bruising
  • pale skin
  • abnormal weakness
  • white patches and sores in the mouth or lips
  • shortness of breath
  • swelling of the feet or ankles
  • stomach pain
  • nausea
  • loss of appetite
  • jaundice
  • urinating less than usual

Less serious side effects are:

  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • vomiting
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • stomach pain
  • headache
  • confusion
  • blurred vision
  • ringing in the ears
  • dry mouth
  • swollen tongue
  • muscle or joint pain
  • leg cramps

Symptoms of an allergic reaction that require emergency treatment are difficulty breathing, hives, and swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, or face.
