Who should not take Carbamazepine XR?

You should not take Carbamazepine XR if you if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, to certain antidepressants, if you are taking nefazodone, or if you have a history of bone marrow suppression. Do not take Carbamazepine XR if you have taken an MAO inhibitor in the past two weeks. Carbamazepine XR should be used with caution in children and the elderly as they may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug. Carbamazepine XR is harmful to the fetus and may cause spina bifida and other congenital abnormalities. This drug is also passed through breast milk. Therefore, be sure to talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or a nursing mother before taking this drug.
