Is there a generic version of Depakote?

Depakote is produced by Abbott Pharmaceuticals. Generic forms of Depakote (divalproex sodium) are available, both in the extended-release and delayed-release forms. Generic forms of delayed-release Depakote are available in three strengths (125 mg., 250 mg. and 500 mg.). Generic forms of extended-release Depakote (Depakote ER) are available in two strengths (250 mg. and 500 mg.). The Food and Drug Association has affirmed that generic forms of Depakote (divalproex sodium) are as effective at treating seizures and mania, as well as preventing migraines as brand names are. However, some doctors caution against suddenly switching to generic brands of seizure medications, as they can contain ingredients that may cause an allergic reaction in some people.
