How does Topamax (topiramate) treat epileptic seizures?

It is not known exactly what chemical reaction or suppressive action causes Topamax to work. Epileptic seizures happen because of irregular signals firing in the brain, causing spasms and other symptoms. It is thought that Topamax works by stopping these rapid, irregular signals from firing in the brain.

The exact mechanism of action of this medication is not known. It affects more than one neurotransmitter systems, which contribute to topiramate antiepileptic efficacy. Since seizures arise from an abnormally excitable area of neurons in the brain this medication lowers the seizure threshold and does not permit the abnormal electrical signal to spread, thus preventing a seizure. This medication needs to be taken twice a day under the supervision of the treating physician to motor for potential adverse effects.
