How does phenytoin interact with other medications?

Taking phenytoin with certain medications may cause an irregular heartbeat and other health problems. If you are allergic to phenytoin, other hydantoin medications, or carbamazepine, you should not take phenytoin. Phenytoin can interact with any of the following medications: amiodarone; anticoagulants, such as warfarin; antidepressants, such as amitriptyline, amoxapine, clomipramine, desipramine, doxepin, imipramine, maprotiline, nortriptyline, protriptyline, and trimipramine; chloramphenicol; chlordiazepoxide; diazepam; digoxin; disulfiram; doxycycline; fluoxetine; furosemide; H2 antagonists (antacids), such as cimetidine, famotidine, nizatidine, and ranitidine; hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills; hormone replacement therapy (HRT); isoniazid; methylphenidate; molindone; paroxetine; quinidine; reserpine; rifampin; and medications for mental illness and nausea. You should also let your doctor know if you're taking any medications for seizures, such as carbamazepine, ethosuximide, methsuximide, phenobarbital, and valproic acid. Oral steroids, such as dexamethasone, methylprednisolone, prednisolone, and prednisone, can have a negative interaction with phenytoin. You will also need to let your doctor know if you're taking salicylate pain relievers, sucralfate, sulfa antibiotics, theophylline, ticlopidine, tolbutamide, trazodone, and vitamin D. You should avoid large amounts of alcohol when taking phenytoin.
