Is Depakote ER safe for pregnant or breast-feeding women?

Depakote ER (divalproex) is not safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women. The drug has been associated with severe birth defects when used during pregnancy. Depakote ER also passes into the breast milk of women who take the drug. It is not recommended for nursing mothers unless the doctor finds that the benefits of taking the medicine outweigh the risks to the baby.
