Can taking valproic acid cause people to commit suicide?

Studies have shown that people with epilepsy who were taking drugs, including valproic acid, to control seizures were more likely to think about killing themselves or to try to kill themselves than people with epilepsy who were not taking these drugs. When people took these drugs for psychiatric disorders (such as bipolar disorder) or other conditions (such as prevention of migraine headaches), the risk of suicide or thoughts about suicide was not as high as it was in people who had epilepsy.
