Can my 19-month-old baby take valproic acid for his seizures?

Children younger than two years of age are at a high risk of getting very serious liver problems if they take valproic acid. Children this young are at the greatest risk if they are taking more than one medicine to control their seizures. They also have an increased chance of having liver problems if they also have a metabolic disorder or if they have a brain disease. Talk with your child’s doctor about the risks of giving this medicine to young children.
