How do herbal supplements interfere with warfarin for A fib?

Douglas E. Severance, MD
Family Medicine
Herbal preparations may interfere with the metabolism of warfarin for atrial fibrillation. Herbal preparations are natural dietary supplements, which are not regulated by the US  Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  Because natural supplements are not regulated by the FDA, they can vary in potency and even be unsafe. Just as medications can change the way warfarin is metabolized in the body, so can herbal supplements. If you take warfarin or other blood thinner for atrial fibrillation, talk to your doctor before taking any herbal preparation or supplement.
