What are the benefits of taking a novel anticoagulant for A Fib?

Douglas E. Severance, MD
Family Medicine
Novel anticoagulants can help prevent dangerous blood clots that can lead to an ischemic stroke in people with atrial fibrillation. An ischemic stroke happens when the blood supply to the brain is blocked by a blood clot. Novel anticoagulants offer the following benefits over traditional blood thinners:
- no need for frequent blood tests
- no dietary monitoring
- less risk of bleeding
- fewer drug interactions with other medications

As with any medication, there are risks and side effects with a novel anticoagulant. So talk to your doctor about the benefits versus possible risks of taking these medications for atrial fibrillation.
