Does nitrofurantoin interact with other medications?

Nitrofurantoin interacts with a number of other medications. These include probenecid or sulfinpyrazone, which can increase the side effects or decrease the effectiveness of nitrofurantoin, as well as benztropine, diphenhydramine, and trihexyphnidyl. Antacids, particularly those that contain magnesium trisilicate, should not be taken with nitrofurantoin. The medication can also interact with other antibiotics and some vitamins.

If you develop severe diarrhea while on this medication, do not start on any medications or treatments for diarrhea without first consulting with a doctor.
