What are the side effects of mafenide acetate?

The side effects of mafenide acetate can be difficult to distinguish from the effects of the burn it is being used to treat. There are a handful of known fatalities associated with treatment from mafenide acetate; these have been due to porphyria, bone marrow depression, and hemolytic anemia. Other serious side effects include acidosis and respiratory problems such as hyperventilation. The most common side effect is irritation at the site of application. Other possible effects include

  • chest pain
  • fast heartbeat
  • headache
  • confusion
  • nausea
  • changes in appetite

Mafenide acetate contains sulfonamides, which may produce allergic reactions in some people.
