What are the side effects of mafenide?

The side effects of mafenide can be difficult to distinguish from the effects of the burn it is being used to treat. The most common side effect is irritation at the site of application. Other possible side effects include: chest pain, fast heartbeat, headaches, confusion, nausea and changes in appetite. Serious side effects include: acidosis and respiratory problems, such as hyperventilation. A handful of known fatalities have been associated with treatment from mafenide; these have been due to porphyria, bone marrow depression and hemolytic anemia.

Mafenide acetate contains sulfonamides, which may produce allergic reactions in some people.
