What is mupirocin?

Mupirocin is the name of the active ingredient in a topical antibiotic used to treat skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria, primarily impetigo. The medication also is used to treat infections of traumatic skin lesions. Nasal mupirocin treats Staphylococcus aureus colonization in the nostrils. Mupirocin is not effective for the treatment of fungal and viral infections. Ointment and cream formulations of the medication are applied topically and the nasal formulation is administered in the nose. Mupirocin is available under the brand name Bactroban.
