What is Bactroban ointment?

Bactroban ointment is a prescription antibiotic ointment used to treat impetigo and other bacterial infections of the skin caused by susceptible bacteria. The active ingredient is the antibiotic mupirocin. The ointment is applied topically to the skin and kills bacteria by interfering with bacterial protein production. Bactroban ointment works against many strains of Staphylococcus aureus, including the methicillin-resistant strain (MRSA), S. epidermidis, S. saprophyticus and against Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria.
