What are the side effects of clioquinol?

Clioquinol can cause unwanted side effects such as itching and dryness of the application spot. However, these side effects are usually mild. More serious side effects include burning, stinging, redness, or swelling of the application site. Serious but rare side effects include:

  • excessive hair growth, inflammation of the hair follicles, and pimple-like rash of the application site
  • inflammation around the mouth
  • muscle weakness
  • discoloration of the skin
  • abnormal weight gain in the face
Severe allergic reaction symptoms include hives, itching, difficulty breathing, rash, tightness in the chest, and swelling (mouth, face, lips, or tongue). If one or more serious or allergic reaction develops, talk to your doctor right away.
